My 15 minutes

Last Wednesday, I was on T.V. for my job (I write for a cooking magazine). I was on a local news station to promote a cookbook. I was terrified. Here’s a link to my debut of cooking on television.

Liz trying not to look like an idiot on T.V.

A few thing to keep in mind:

1) They made me stand on a box so my 5’2″ frame would look less dwarf-like next to the 5’9″ host. So I spent most of the segment just waiting for the moment when I would fall off the box and onto my ass on live t.v.

2) All I could hear and see was my quivering voice and shaking hands. Somehow, through television magic, all of it was minimized on screen.

3) I was so nervous about doing this, that I debated telling anyone. I finally told my parents and in-laws a few hours before hand and waited to tell everyone else until after the show aired and I could determine if I wanted anyone to witness it. Since I didn’t fall and avoided any major faux pas, I thought I’d share it with you guys, too.

4) I stand like a statue while the host introduces me. The head of our PR department gave me this advice, “When they’re introducing you, the only thing you should look at is the host giving the introduction, otherwise, you’ll end up looking at the wrong camera.” Which is totally true. But, I took his words a little too much to heart and literally fixated on the host while she introduced me. It makes me uncomfortable to watch those first few seconds.

I cannot put into words how relieved I was when the segment was over. I’ve done on-air interviews in the past for my last job as a PR director for the Milwaukee County Historical Society. But it had been years since I’d done it and I’d never cooked on t.v. before, or represented the company I work for in this way. I am so grateful that I didn’t royally f it all up.

You did so well and looked so cute doing it! I would have been very nervous too. I didn’t realize you worked for Taste of Home that’s so cool!

Oh and I guess working for the Historical Society helps explain your love for old historic homes right? My mom actually works for the State Historical Society downtown. What a small world.

Nice mugging for the camera, Liz. I’m surprised you didn’t take a bow.

Seriously, you’re much more appealing than Rachel Ray. Great job.

Oh Liz, you were AWESOME! Don’t be so hard on yourself. I heard your voice shake a few times but if you hadn’t mentioned it in your post, I don’t think I would have even noticed. You were very professional – like you’ve done cooking demos a hundred times.

Liz!!! Bryan and I just watched your segment–you were awesome!! You didn’t sound or look nervous at all! I can’t believe you didn’t tell us about your 15 minutes on tv last weekend…you are WAY too modest 🙂 So proud of you!

That was amazing! I am so proud of you! I agree with Courtney–no secret keeping about your fame! And I am very impressed by your height:) How did you remember what to say so well without fumbling?? Amazing!

Thank you! I’m glad you all think it was okay. Did you notice that the host I was with ate a kidney bean out of the slow cooker? It was sitting on raw chicken! Thanks again for all the great comments!

Wow! Liz, you did so great. You looked perfectly normal when she was introducing you, your hands did not look shaky in the least, and you had one sentence where you were a little quavery at the beginning — and only someone who 1. knows you and 2. had just read a post in which you fretted about it would have even noticed it. Seriously.

Plus, you did it all while standing on a box. Badass.
