A Constructed Life

One simple question for y’all

I am faced with an inevitable reality. An undeniable truth that I cannot escape no matter how tightly I close my eyes, cover my ears and loudly hum The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Here is that truth:

When you don’t move very much for oh, say, the exact age of your daughter (15 months), your muscles shrivel up until they fall off your bones and then crawl away, eventually becoming what you think are just dust bunnies underneath your bed.

I am weak. I feel sore after just an hour of playing at the park with Addy. I’m squishy everywhere. I get winded when I walk fast and talk at the same time.

So here is the even bigger truth: Somehow, I have to fit working out into my day again. For my own health and happiness and to maybe not have to wear Spanx as often as I do.

And this is where you come in. I can either A) get up at 4:45 and exercise for 45 minutes before I get ready for work or B) wait until after dinner and Addy goes to bed and workout from 7:45-8:30.

What’s the less hellish option? Neither, I know, but you have to pick one. A or B? And no, there’s no other options. I don’t get home until about 6 p.m. and Addy is asleep by 7:30, so I don’t want to miss the already brief amount of time I have with her.

They say it takes 3 weeks to create a new routine. So my plan is to go with whatever option you pick and stick with it for 3 weeks no matter how tortuous it may be. Hopefully after that, it will suck less and one day, I will wake up in the morning and find my muscles have climbed out from under the bed and returned themselves to their rightful place on my body.

Hey Liz, I would go with the night workout (provided you are ok with staying up until 10 pm, because you will need time to cool down.)

    Upsides to this
1 – You can watch the night tv shows if you are on the elliptical/treadmill, two birds, one stone
2 – You can shower at night and then have a less hectic morning (provided you don’t have too crazy of bed head, showering at night will also help you relax)
3 – 4:45 is insanely early to work out, I am going at 5:45 now and it is pitch black out, however, it does get your blood moving, but I feel like it might make your mornings more hectic with Addy?

Morning is the only thing that consistently works for me. I NEVER feel like working out by 8 at night, but that’s just me.

Don’t try to be a superstar…even if you do 3 days a week and then once on the weekend, that’s something. (I’m with wise John Mc, though. 30 minutes, 5 am doesn’t sound so bad.)

    Good luck.

Thank you so much for answering. Okay. I’ll attempt the morning workout and aim for working out 3 to 4 days a week. I am not excited about this. I’ll start next week. I want to cry!

Rather than stick to a schedule why not work out with Addy and exercise together-say Yoga. I bought one of those giant exercise balls a few weeks back. Lane and I play on it. We sit and bounce-believe me, I get more of a workout than I think. He really likes doing Yoga with me-he does a mean downward dog.Or go for a walk add some ankle weights and work out as you go. You could also put some music on and dance together. I know the feeling though, my muscles ache all over these days but I find that 20 minutes a day has made a difference. Sucks getting old.
