Sweet Adeline

When people first learn Adeline’s name, they frequently exclaim, “Oh, just like the song!” and at first, Joey and I would stare blankly back at them thinking, “Like what song?” More often than not, the song they were actually referring to was Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” However, we did finally learn that there really is a song called “Sweet Adeline.” We had no idea of this and that’s probably because it’s typically sung by barbershop quartets, a genre of music we don’t often listen to. Unless it’s presented as a singing contest on an NBC television show that’s hosted by Nick Lachey.

A few months ago, my mom dug up the song’s lyrics, and I have to admit, I wasn’t too impressed.

In the evening when I sit alone a-dreaming
Of days gone by, love, to me so dear,
There’s a picture that in fancy oft’ appearing,
Brings back the time, love, when you were near.
It is then I wonder where you are, my darling,
And if your heart to me is still the same.
For the sighing wind and nightingale a-singing
Are breathing only your own sweet name.

Sweet Adeline, (My Adeline,) My Adeline, (My Adeline,)
At night, dear heart, (At night, dear heart,) For you I pine. (For you I pine.)
In all my dreams, (In all my dreams,) Your fair face beams. (Your fair face beams.)
You’re the flower of my heart, Sweet Adeline. (My Adeline.)

I can see your smiling face as when we wandered
Down by the brook-side, just you and I,
And it seems so real at times ’til I awaken,
To find all vanished, a dream gone by.
If we must meet sometime in after years, my darling, I trust that I will find your love still mine, Though my heart is sad and clouds above are hov’ring The sun again, love, for me would shine. [Chorus]
However, one line stood out to me. “You’re the flower of my heart, Sweet Adeline.” I loved that.

So, I turned to my friend and co-worker, Cheri, for help, who in turn turned to her talented graphic designer husband, Derek, who created this for Adeline’s room.

You can’t see it in these photos, but “Adeline” is wallpapered in the background of the image, faintly filling in the white space.

She seems to love it, too, as I frequently find her looking up at while she’s lying in her crib.

It’s the perfect piece of artwork for my baby girl, who has made so many hearts blossom. I know, that’s almost groan-worthy sappiness, but when it comes to Addy, I have no control over how mushy I get.

P.S. I recently learned there’s another “Sweet Adeline” song by an artist named Elliott Smith.

I was just about to tell you about the Elliot Smith version, which is an amazing song, and then I got to the end of your post where you ruined my surprise. 🙁
