A Constructed Life

A note to The Boy

Dear Baby Boy,

Your arrival is less than 2 months away. I am counting down the days (58) with a mix of excited anticipation and frenetic preparation. Your Daddy and I have talked about you every day for the last nine months, with each other, friends, family and your big sister, Adeline.

I am grateful that I can welcome you to the world with some knowledge of how to care for you. Though she doesn’t know it, your big sister is already helping you out, as she continues to teach us what it means to be parents and how to handle all the phases from newborn to age 2. As the first born, she will do you this favor for the rest of her life, just as my big sister has done for me. I cannot wait to watch your relationship as brother and sister begin and grow. I want you to know that you are entering a family that already loves you and has a spot ready in their hearts for you.

I try to guess what you will be like based on your activity in my belly and your ultrasound photos. You seem to always be moving, but rather than the big flurries of activity I experienced with your sister, your movements are more regular, constant and only occasionally gigantic. I’m hoping that means you’ll have a gentle and somewhat mellow nature.

I can’t wait to make you part of this family, to bring you into the equation and build you into our routine (and change it to accommodate you), to share with you all the things we’ve shared with your sister and see how you react to them. I can’t wait to know you, to see if you’re a good sleeper (please!) and eater (please!), what your preferences are and to ultimately begin learning who my little boy is.

I love you,

Mama
