A Constructed Life

The secret garden

About ten years ago, my parents moved from the ‘burbs to a 140-year-old farm in the country. It’s been an endless source of joy for our entire family, but also a lot of work for my mom and dad to maintain.

One of the most magical parts of moving on to 35 acres that have been inhabited for over a century is making surprise discoveries of what generations before left behind.

And here’s a delicious one…

…asparagus that creeps out of the ground each spring in unusual places; between the piles of wood waiting to be chopped for winter, in the large patch of tall grass left of the soybean field, in between patches of heirloom irises in an old flower bed.

The flavor of homegrown asparagus is incomparable, and pulling them from hidden corners of the land makes it even better.

Now that summer has hit all corners off the country, I hope you get the chance to enjoy some of the season’s best flavors this weekend!

I’m very jealous. Every year I say I’m going to plant asparagus and then never do. It’s an awesome veggie. I have great memories of picking it from my grandma’s garden.

Nothing beats the joys of outdoor areas and free greens! It looks like one wonderful space to enjoy what nature brings. How about an outdoor space on the field so can take pleasure in the surroundings more?
