A Constructed Life

Makes me so crazy happy

If someone were to tell you that they have a degree in horticulture, you might assume that they have a great yard filled with copious blooming flowers, meandering pathways and abundant vegetables.

And then you might be shocked to learn that, while there are copious flowers, they largely consist of dandelions, the meandering paths exist only because of dead patches of grass and the abundant vegetables tend to rot on the ground come mid September.

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I’m describing my own yard – a yard that belongs to someone who spent 4 years learning how to grow and care for thousands of plants.

We have neglected the exterior of our home in order to improve the interior, and then a baby came along and she wasn’t much interested in my “gardens.”

Until now. This spring, Adeline has shocked me by becoming obsessed with playing in the dirt. All she needs is a small garden trowel and bucket and the kid is entertained for hours. Literally. She can outlast me in the garden.

And so, for the first time in years, I am able to focus on our crappy garden, make plans for a new patio and manage the infestation of weeds.

.

There is hope that we may one day have a descent yard, and it’s all thanks to my daughter, especially if I can convince her to stop dumping dirt on the nice plants and stomp all over the crappy ones instead.
