A Constructed Life

“Spicing” Up My Kitchen

Recently, we completed a remodeling project that left the song “2 Become 1” by The Spice Girls in my head. You may be wondering 1) Why do I know the lyrics to a Spice Girl’s Song? and 2) What the heck kind of home remodeling project inspires one to think of an all-girl British pop band with names like “Posh,” “Scary” and Sporty”?

Well, before I go any further, let me do you a favor. Perhaps you’re not familiar with The Spice Girl’s work or don’t recall the inspiring song I’m speaking of. In that case, you should probably take a listen, cause you don’t want to miss out on this vocal masterpiece. Also, hearing this song in the background as you read adds “a little something extra” to this post.

Now, back to the project in which “2 Became 1.”

Our kitchen originally had two windows. See?

Besides the fact that gusts of wind blew right through them when they were closed, they were lovely windows. However, as we planned out the footprint for our new kitchen, we realized that having two windows limited the number of cabinets we could hang on the wall.

So, we hired an awesome contractor, Rick, to turn our two windows into one window. He popped out the old windows and sliced out the 1′ section of our house sitting between them…

…and turned the two windows into one. Two into one. 2 became 1. Now do you understand why this song was suddenly freed from my memory bank of bad 90s music? Trust me, I was shocked when it happened.

After inserting our new, single window, Rick wove new cedar clapboards in with our old ones and created a new exterior window frame that matches the other original ones. This should make it appear as if the kitchen always had just one window.

Although I’m sad our kitchen has a little less light shining into it, I think this move is worth it. We don’t have much room for cabinets, so every one we can get is a bonus and there’s still lots of light coming into the room from other windows and doors.

Now we just need to prime and paint the new clapboards a creamy butter-yellow color so they match the rest of the house. I bet you can’t wait to hear what song pops into my head for that project. Is there an “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” jingle I could start humming in preparation?

Hmmmm… 2 windows, side by side… original installation? I'm thinking there was a wall between them sometime in their history. Anyone?

Thanks for the comments, guys! It's going to look even better when we have walls again!

Bryce – as far as I know, there was never a wall between the windows. The floor boards don't indicate that a wall ran over them, but who knows! You could be on to something.
