A Constructed Life

Look! Our Kitchen’s Done!

Didn’t it turn out great? Surprised you didn’t see any photos of the progress of this project? There’s a good reason for that, and it is best summed up by these lyrics from 90s pop music icon Debbie Gibson.

“It was only in my dreams.
As real as it may seem.
It was only in my dreams.”

Thank you, Deborah, for such inspiring music. If you’d like to enjoy the song in its entirety, click play.

I cannot continue with this post until I say three things about this video. First, don’t you just LOVE her jacket? My life would’ve been so much better if I had had that when I was 11. Second, I had no idea she was such a tease. Look at her toying with the audience and taunting them with the song. “Please, Debbie, please!!! We can’t wait another second for your angelic voice and compelling lyrics! Please just sing it, Debbie, or I will collapse on the ground from screaming through my braces!” Finally, I need to admit that I adored Debbie Gibson, her music and her Electric Youth perfume when I was a pre-teen.

Okay, back to reality and the kitchen. We haven’t even started the demo of the kitchen yet, let alone completed the project. However, we did finally pick out our cabinets, which you can see in the above image.

We decided to get our cabinets from Ikea, because even the cheaper laminate and thermofoil option at Home Depot and Lowe’s are way too expensive and we’ve read really mixed reviews on them. And since our kitchen design philosophy is “decent and looks nice,” not “high end and gorgeous,” the Ikea cabinets should work well. Plus, we did a little research and have only read good things about Ikea’s kitchen cabinets, so we feel good about using them.

There is one drawback – we have to assemble all the cabinets ourselves before diving into the joy of installing them. And since we did all the measuring for the cabinets ourselves, we also have to keep our fingers and toes crossed in hopes that everything will fit where it’s supposed to.

Now we just have to settle on countertops and a sink and the demo can begin. We’re thinking of doing the island in butcher block and the rest of the counters, which there aren’t a lot of, in Corian. Or some entirely different surface. In other words, we really have no idea.

Any suggestions on what materials look nice, aren’t too expensive and hold up well in a kitchen?

I actually still have my Electric Youth perfume! If you play your cards right, I’ll bring it into work for us to enjoy when I”m done with maternity leave. That’s a threat or a promise – you decide. Though I don’t know if you really want to spritz yourself with 20-year old perfume. It didn’t smell that great the first time around.

Well I for one say pick stone or a quartz countertop. They really are the same price point as Corian and much more durable.
