A Constructed Life

Bye, Bye Garage!

Overnight, my next door neighbor’s garage up and walked away. At least it was there yesterday morning when I left for work and had vanished by the time I returned home. Happily, I know just where it ended up.

It’s in the back of that truck…only its shape has changed slightly.

You see, after a huge storm swept through our town last summer, this tree in my neighbor’s yard (that’s our house behind it)…

…snapped in half, sending a large portion of it careening on to their garage.  Needless to say, it caused some damage.

If you look closely at the house behind it, you’ll see the tree even broke a few of their windows.
My neighbor, Katie, is just as crazy about historic preservation as I am, so I completely felt for her when she was advised to tear down the garage due to the extent of the damage.  My photos only capture a small amount of the problems facing this building.
So, Katie made a hard choice, and hired a contractor to remove the old building and erect a new one in its place.
Here are the “Before” pictures of the garage, with the empty dumpster in the driveway.

And here are the “Afters”…

It’s so interesting to see the architecture that was hidden behind the garage walls.  So far, Katie is thrilled with the contractor she chose.  You’ll notice they’ve already dropped off supplies to start building, and as I type this, they’re over there preparing to get started.  All this, only 15 hours after they tore that baby down.  Pretty impressive.

If it’s okay with Katie, I’ll snap a few photos of the new garage as it goes up so you can see the end result.
P.S. I just have to share the story of how I first met Katie.   I found out she was my neighbor when she called the historical society I was working at a few years ago, trying to dig up information on her house and its former inhabitants.  As I spoke with her, I quickly realized we lived in the same town.  After a few more minutes, I realized we lived on the same street, and by the end of the call, we discovered we lived right next door to each other.  It’s so fun having a friend who loves the history of her home as much as I do.  Katie’s found so many cool things in her house and I get such a kick out of seeing her newest discoveries.  She’s also knee-deep in a few of her own home improvements projects, and it’s great to have someone right next door to exchange ideas and information with.  Thanks for being such a great neighbor, Katie!  We’re so happy it’s you, and not a total weirdo, living 10 feet away from us!
