A Constructed Life

Dolphins Belong in the Water, Not on Walls

Recently, our foyer went from this…

…to this.

Although I was thankful that the paisley wallpaper and retro paneling had been banished from our home, the flat, cream-colored paint that was sprayed on after it just didn’t float my boat. Or ring my bell. Or tickle my fancy.

So Joey and I concluded that it was time to pick another paint color and, in what was one of the most unanimous decisions we have ever made, we agreed that a shade of gray would look nice. We hopped in the car and headed toward Home Depot and our gray paint. Since no paint color is given the simple and straightforward name of “gray,” we arrived home with a few gallons of this:

Porpoise.

We thought it was a fitting choice since we had recently painted the guest bedroom walls with this:

Koala Bear. What can I say? I like pictures of animals with their mouths wide open.

When we arrived home, Joey walked in the door, grabbed a paint brush and with just a few strokes, our walls were spotted with Porpoise.

We stared at it for a while. Stood in different spots in the room. Turned the lights on and off. Squinted our eyes. No matter what we did, we just couldn’t bring ourselves to like it. It just wasn’t the bee’s knees, the cat’s meow or even the cat’s pajama’s.

After a brief discussion where we repeatedly said “Why the hell did we think gray would look good? Our entire house is painted in warm earth tones. Porpoises would do a better job at picking out paint colors and so would Koala Bears,” we headed back to Home Depot and returned with a non-animal named paint.

Pebblestone.

Here’s a comparison of Porpoise and Pebblestone. Please try not to be too distracted by the hideousness that is our kitchen.

Pebblestone totally kicked Porpoise’s butt in our side-by-side comparison and now our foyer looks like this.

Actually, that’s how it looked moments before it was filled with boots and sleeping bags from the guests at our holiday party. And now it’s looking rather bleak because I took down all the Christmas decorations. Maybe I’ll pick up a few dolphin figurines to dress it up a bit.

There’s nothing worse than making those first swipes with the paintbrush and thinking “This isn’t the color I picked out! Why would I want to paint my walls such a hideous color?!! Wait. Maybe I like it. I HAVE to like it!… Oh no, what have I done?!!” We’ve all been there!

Hey Kelly! it’s the worst feeling, isn’t it? That no return paint policy really bit us in the butt.

Karen Anne – good eyes! We took out the old leaded glass window to make way for a newer, less drafty one. We’re keeping the old though and will be hanging it up somewhere in our house.

    Thank you, Susie!
