A Constructed Life

The Invasion of the Drywall

What is that being hoisted into our lives? Drywall. Lots of it. We’ve never installed drywall before, so naturally we decide to drywall our entire house ourselves. The majority of it will find a home on our second floor, which has been gutted. Because the narrow, twisting hallways of our old house prevent us from carrying 8′ sheets of drywall from the first floor to the second floor, we had to have it lifted over our garage to a porch door on the second floor.

Our happiness to see the drywall was matched by our disdain for it. On one hand, it meant we’d soon have walls, not just studs filled with nasty insulation. But on the other hand, it means we’ll be spending days hanging it and weeks mudding and taping it. I am optimistic, yet apprehensive, and wishing we could just hire someone to do it for us…
