A Constructed Life

She said she wanted a polka dot birthday…

While they were forced upon her at birth via the decor of her room, Adeline has latched onto polka dots and made them her thing. She’s partial to polka dot clothing, her favorite blanket is covered in them (and aptly named Polka Dot the Polka Deet)…I could go on and on. So when she requested a polka-dot-themed party for her third birthday, I wasn’t at all surprised and more than happy to oblige. I began planning and purchasing, stocking up on Dots candy, candy buttons, polka dot tablecloths, dot-shaped sprinkles for cupcakes and any and everything polka-dots that I could find for the party we’re hosting this Sunday.

Her actual birthday was the 20th, and I stayed up into the wee hours of the night cutting out polka dots to hang in her doorway so she could wake up to some surprise polka dot birthday fun.

Do you see the excitement in her eyes upon finding them? The pure gratitude that her mommy was up until midnight cutting out those circles?

As she sat there on the steps, I asked her if she liked her polka dot doorway. She said, “But Mommy, where are the ghosts?” I wanted to say, “What the hell are you talking about?” which I rephrased as “Ghosts?”

“Yes, Mommy. I want polka dots and ghosts for my birthday party.”

“You want ghosts?” I asked, realizing that she recently became captivated by Casper the Friendly Ghost and is developing a love of all things spooky.

“Yes. Please make it polka dots and ghosts for my party.”

“Okay,” I said, as my wheels quickly started spinning in a desperate attempt to tie those two themes together while also fearing how she’d react to her brother’s 1st birthday party, which is on Halloween and destined to be a ghost and ghoul-filled event.

So now I have to figure out how to incorporate ghosts into our polka dot party. Or make the executive decision to gift her with another Casper movie and just go with the polka dots. In the meantime, we’ve been enjoying a week long birthday celebration.

Happy Birthday, Sweet Adeline!

She’s in 3T and I would say she needs pajamas, jeans or any kind of clothing. She also likes puzzles, drawing/coloring and books. Looking forward to seeing you!
