A Constructed Life

Happy Anniversary!

Seven years ago, on July 23rd, I was a bride. And a year before that, I was a fiance. Here are never-before-blogged-about photos of Joey and I on the night he proposed. By the way, isn’t it great that after years of hiding his face on this blog (god forbid any of his students stumble upon it), he’s finally given me approval to show it?

Here we are, in 2003, at the young age of 24. Joey had just proposed to me on the second-to-the-top-floor (because the top floor was far too crowded for his liking) of Eagle Tower in Peninsula State Park in Door County, WI. Then he whisked me off to my favorite fish fry spot in town – the Greenwood Supper Club. Yes, I know, that makes me sound like I’m 80, but their perch is so good, you’d would want to spend your engagement night dining on it, too.

Does he have his hand on my butt in our first ever photo as an engaged couple?!!!

Joey surprised me one more time by arranged for his parents and my parents to be at the restaurant waiting for us. I was so happy and excited to share the moment with them. As soon as I caught a glimpse of them, and realized the man who looked so much like my dad actually was my dad, I went running to them, yelling, “We’re engaged! We’re engaged!”

And that’s how this chapter of our lives together started. There are many chapters before it, and I’m counting on an epic number of chapters to follow.

Seven years sounds like a long time on one hand, but then I compare it to the 45 years that my parents have been married and realize it’s just a drop in the bucket. We have a lot ahead of us. And I’m happy to say that I still feel excited about it. Happy Anniversary, Joey, and thank you for everything.
