A Constructed Life

A hero to discarded furniture everywhere

Recently, I made like Superman and saved something from certain death. It was this little guy…

…who had been moved from a bedroom in my family’s cabin to the burn pile at my family’s cabin. He’s cute, isn’t he? And sized just right for Addy’s room, providing enough storage for some of her 10 trillion toys and accessible enough for her to slide open the doors, yank all the toys out and throw them on the ground, which, these days, seems to be all her toys are good for.

While I do have a use for this little cabinet, my real reason for rescuing it from imminent destruction is more about sentiment than function.

This is where my grandmother kept all of her toiletries at our cabin. It was off limits to me as a child, so naturally, I looked in it every chance I got, quietly and carefully sliding the doors open when no one was looking, desperate to see what precious cargo it contained. I found a treasure trove of femininity – bubble bath, nail polish, hair and skin products, scented soaps and more.

This little cabinet and its contents are partly why I have always viewed my grandmother as the ultimate “lady.” She takes baths, not showers, has her hair set every week, firmly believes in hand-written correspondence and always serves meals on one of her 10 sets of china. Even now, at 93-years-old, my grandmother is still an iconic kind of woman to me. And since she’s charmed by my daughter, she’ll be happy to know that the cabinet that once held her treasures will now be home to her first great-grandchild’s trinkets.

I’m planning on repainting the cabinet to match the primary color scheme in Addy’s room, but I also want to give it a bit of a retro feel, so I’m looking at this color palette.

I’m thinking of painting the exterior blue or red and then using the remaining colors to paint the slats. What do you think? Too busy? Too much of a pain in the butt to paint every slat a different color?

Cute idea. What about leaving the base/frame white and then just painting the slats like a rainbow from red to blue with those colors? I think the white looks nice against the crown molding and makes it pop.

I like the rainbow slats idea. I have lots of little painting project sigh..so little time.

-on a side note-I listed you as one of my favorite blogs so you may have a few extra friends visit.

OK, I feel like I would be a bad friends if I didn’t comment on “your little guy”. . .Good thing you saved him,he is great! But I’m kind of with ya on the, that would be to busy idea. And I can just see you starting it and then it drives you nuts trying to make every color painted perfect. Then he wouldn’t be fun anymore. I do love the blue and red throw back colors idea. So. . .maybe just do the whole thing one color and the slats the other color. Good luck. OH and by the way Your stripper is still at my house if you need him for your new project. 🙂 He was the best helper a girl could ask for when working with wood!

I would never attempt to paint the slats different colors; you’re a braver woman than me. But it’ll look cute with different knobs, too, huh? Can’t wait to see what the end result is.

Um… To quote Ms. Ennis: “Your stripper is still at my house if you need him for your new project. He was the best helper a girl could ask for when working with wood!”

    That’s what she said?

    Wow. ‘Construction’ is awesome.
