A Constructed Life

Not excited at all

Now that Addy is 7-months old and I’ve adjust to (this stage of) parenthood, I’m finding ways to squeeze more things into my daily routine, like exercise and sleep.

I’ve always preferred coincidental exercise, where the activity you’re happily participating in, like gardening, also happens to burn calories. But, I’m sick of the belly pooch I have after stretching my abdominal area around a 7 lb baby. Plus, I’ve become a total wimp. At the height of our home remodeling, I knocked down half my house and hauled it into a dumpster by hand. I miss being able to say, “Sure, I can help you carry the refrigerator to the basement. Just strap it to my back and I’ll quick run it down with the next load of whites.”

When I was 6-months pregnant, envisioning daily work outs when my newborn slept (which, of course, would be all the time), I bought this DVD because “I am so going to get right back into shape.” I used this DVD for the very first time 2 weeks ago. And it’s proving to be tough to fit into my day. So tough, that I am now waking up at 4:45 a.m. to squeeze it in before getting myself and Addy ready for the day before leaving for work.

But here’s the thing about this video. I believe it. I believe that teeny tiny Tracy “I gained 60 lbs with my son” Anderson can make my tummy stop jiggling. Yes, it totally helps that she’s Gwenyth Paltrow and Madonna’s trainer, because I, for one, would be okay if even one inch of my body looked like theirs. Even if it was just their elbows or an ear lobe – I’ll take ’em!

However, I’m worried it’s too late for me, because at 5:15 this morning, Tracy said “It’s really important to start working your abs every day as soon as your doctor releases you to exercise.” My doctor gave me the green light on exercise 5-1/2 months ago and my abs have been stagnant ever since, preoccupied with the chore of holding my organs in place. So let’s hope my ear lobes suddenly become quite glamorous, otherwise I’ll be really disappointed.
