A Constructed Life

A Perfectly Miserable Afternoon

The sun was shining. Birds were chirping. The sky was a piercing shade of blue and a gentle breeze tickled the leaves lounging on the trees. It was the stereotypical backdrop for a completely unsatisfying day.

Last Friday, I wanted to share the idyllic weather with my 8-day-old daughter in an equally idyllic setting – my parents farm, where meadows and forests rule the landscape and frogs and crickets create an inspiring soundtrack.

I packed my little Adeline up, along with her never-before-used Jeep All-Terrain Stroller (given to us by my amazing co-workers), and excitedly headed to the farm, which is just five minutes away from my home.
I unveiled the stroller and rested her car seat/carrier onto it, following the manufacturer’s instructions word for word.

I carefully settled my darling daughter into it, taking painstaking measures to ensure the sun did not hit her delicate, newly-created skin. Feeling confident that my love of the farm, and the outdoors in general, had transferred to my daughter at birth, we set off down an old cow lane that slices through two lush farm fields.

And what did my beloved little angel think of our first outdoor excursion? Was she captivated by the verdant scenery around her? Did her tiny ears perk up upon hearing a cricket’s chirp for the first time?
No. No, they did not. Instead, she took a breath of fresh country air and drowned out nature’s sound with her own.
She did not immediately take to the outdoors. But then again, when you’ve only been alive for eight days, I suppose mother nature can be a bit overstimulating.
I am pleased the say that five minutes after taking the above photos, my little girl settled down and continued the rest of our walk with her blue eyes wide open.

I am certain this is just the beginning of a long and reciprocal relationship with the outdoors. And that’s because she doesn’t have a choice in the matter.

Oh my gosh!!! She is just about the cutest thing!! Even while she is screaming!!

I love how our children love to ruin our perfectly planned and dreamed situations with their discomfort. Stinkers.

CUTE I have the same stroller and did the same thing a couple weeks ago with my newborn. Took him for a walk in the beautiful countryside and enjoyed the lovely gift that God has given me.
