A Constructed Life

Buh-Bye, Kitchen!

I am happy to say I no longer have a kitchen. My oven is gone, as is the sink, and the walls have vanished along with the ceiling, plumbing and electricity.  Good riddance to it all!

On May 9th, a dumpster landed in our driveway and 5 men, ranging in age from 16 to 56, assembled in our home, equipped with hammers, crowbars, safety goggles and respirators. I shot a few Before photos and left the scene. Since I’m working hard to grow a healthy human, I felt it neccesary to escape before crumbling plaster and insulation filled my home with a thick cloud of mysterious dust particles.

In the 2.5 years we’ve spent gutting and rebuilding our home, this was the first time I didn’t work alongside our friends as we tore down walls. I always enjoyed the demo and how strong and tough it made me feel. I thought I’d feel pangs of disappointment as I watched the boys prepare to work, but as I gathered my 200 snacks and prepared to leave the house, I felt a little giddy knowing I would miss the strenuous and filthy task that lay ahead.

When I left, my kitchen was intact. When I returned, it was demolished. Here are a few Before and After photos:

It’s a pretty dramatic transformation and I already think our kitchen looks better.  This is a quick overview of things and still have lots to share with you.  Like what’s become of the built-in pantry cabinet and dining room china cabinet, the 1913 farmhouse sink and original push-button light switches.  Or what it’s like to live in a home without a stove, cabinets and sink and patchy electricity.

But for now, I’m going to enjoy the long weekend and extra time to work on the house.  Hope you guys do the same!

We’re approaching the end of our period without a kitchen. I’m install cabinets today, and the countertop comes next week.
