A Constructed Life

The Doors of Our Lives

You know the saying “When one door closes, another one opens?” Well for us, it’s more like “When one ugly door goes away, another one takes its place.” This time, instead of fixing the previous owners decorating faux-pas, we were trying to improve our own.

You see, our Master Bedroom has a door in it. And that door leads to a tiny little stoop over the garage.

See? The stoop is pretty much pointless – it’s just large enough for one person to stand on or to store a bag of home remodeling garbage.

When renovating the Master Bedroom, we debated just filling in the door with a window, but we had a hard time parting with the idea of a great little porch off the bedroom, so we left the doorway and installed a new storm and interior door instead. We’ll build an adorable little porch over the garage “someday.”

Here’s a shot of the old door, in the old set up of the house. This tiny little bedroom (three boys used to share it!) is now part of the Master Bedroom.

We went to Lisbon Storm and Door in Milwaukee and picked up a specially made door to fit the 28X80 sized door frame.

After hanging the door, Joey and I weren’t too thrilled with how it looked in the room. My heart had been set on a paneled door, but that would’ve cost us about $800. And that’s too much.

So, we decided to add some trim to jazz up our regular ‘ol door.

It’s much improved and was dirt cheap. Which is our philosophy when it comes to home improvement.

We’re still trying to decide if we like it or not. I think it has a cool, retro vibe and Joey thinks it looks like the 1970s. Either way, it’s an improvement from “ugly.”

It looks great, I think it was a really good idea!
You have to come and see what I found in my attic! I have now been opened up to a whole new world that I didn’t even know was up there. In the four years that we have lived there I was told there was nothing up there. So I never felt like moving everything out of my closet, to get up there. Well guess what HE was so wrong!! And I’m so excited, and I need your help to find where all of it use to go in the house. 🙂
