A Constructed Life

Remodeling Soundtrack

Lord knows when you’re physically laboring on your house for hours on end, you need some tunes to keep you motivated and pumped up. Or to mellow you out when you’re so frustrated that you uncontrollably begin hurling tools through the air. I mean, not that I’ve ever done that. I just imagine it’s something people would do when they have no idea how to complete a project that must be done in the next 3 hours.

So, here’s a few of my favorite songs. Maybe you’ll find a few that you like too.

I listen to these when I’m tackling a relatively easy project and just want to enjoy myself:

The Subdudes – I became obsessed with this band after a trip to New Orleans with three of my girlfriends. That city attacked my heart and wrapped it around it in just 3 days. Poor Man’s Paradise captures the vibe of New Orleans for me. Too bad this video doesn’t do the song justice. If you decide you like them, go to itunes and listen to The Rain, You’re Home is Next to Me, Sound of Her Voice, Standin’ Tall and Got You on His Mind. Pretty much anything is good.

Citizen Cope – Son’s Gonna Rise. I just like it.

Rachael Yamagata – I Want You. I am not responsible for the video this music is set too. If you’re not a Grey’s Anatomy fan, just block it out.

And these are for when I’m dragging and really need to get pumped up to get the job done:

Saul Williams – List of Demands. This. Is. Good. Just wait for the chorus.

Goldfrapp – Ooh la la. Wait till it gets to 48 seconds before you make a judgement.

Duffy – Mercy. This is on the radio now and I think it’s impossible not to like it.

When I begin exclaiming, “Just chill out already!” and Joey starts taking out his frustrations on the tools, I know it’s time for these:

Van Morrison – Into the Mystic. I have been in love with this song since I was 14 years old. Again, this isn’t about the video, it’s about the song. But happily, this video is actually kinda soothing, too.

Sia – Breath Me. What a sad, beautiful song.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah. This song seeps into your heart. Give it till 1:00. It was recently sung on American Idol. But don’t judge it based on that.

All of these songs are available on itunes.

I love listening to tunes when I’m working around the house and such. It is too bad though that I’ve never heard of any of these bands.

My goto lately for getting some work done is The Black Keys. They are killer.

I can understand the need for music in order to get something done though.
