A Constructed Life

The Writing on the Drywall

So, it’s the beginning of the week, which means the standard question at the office is “How was your weekend?” For most people my answer is “Good. We got a lot of work done on the house.” But with you, I share the details.

I spent most of my weekend with my house, just me and it, working to make it better. And at hour 4 of mudding the drywall, I paused – mudding trowel in mid-air with gray goop threatening to hurl itself onto the floor – to take note of my progress. It was at that moment that I noticed the notes and scribbles we’d made on the drywall. Each one captured a moment of our work on the master suite, and I was about to cover them all up with mud. I’m a sentimental kind of gal, so before slathering mud over our hieroglyphs, I took pictures of them.

This is our “to do” list for the master suite. I adore crossing things off this list.

Here’s my favorite:

Awwww! I’m not sure if Joey or one of our friends wrote that, but it makes me smile every time I see it. Even if Joey did ditch me for a “Boys Weekend” instead of a “Help my Wife with the House Weekend.”

Here’s some drywall measurements and where Rick, our window guy, wrote his phone number so we can call him to order more windows. Rick is one of the two ‘guys’ we have. Our other ‘guy’ is our plumber. And we’re the ‘guys’ who do all the rest of the work, along with the family and friends we’ve convinced to help us.

And here’s some tile math from when we figured out how to arrange the tiles in the shower (that’s the hardest part of tiling, by the way). Joey does all the measurements and ‘figuring of things’ because he’s the ‘math guy.’ I do all the reading and writing because I’m the ‘words and letters guy.’ Math is not my thing. I’m the ‘anti-math guy.’

To show my ‘words and letters’ skills, I wrote this on the wall in the master bath:

As you can see, I’m right up there with the literary greats. That sentence is brimming with symbolism and foreshadowing.

Tomorrow, I will employ my ‘words and letters’ skills to express which type of drywall tape I prefer to use. Okay, I’ll give you a hint…I hate paper tape. Well, ‘hate’ is a strong word. I prefer not to use paper tape, even if it is what the professionals use when mudding. You probably have your own opinion on drywall tape and I welcome you to share it here. See you tomorrow!
