A Constructed Life

Another room finished!

What was once a pale green master bedroom (and when I say it was pale green, I mean the walls were pale green, the ceiling was pale green and the trim was pale green), is now a koala bear-colored guest bedroom. I cannot even begin to express how good it feels to have another room finished. This one took a while.

Here’s the bedroom, which we had been sleeping in since we bought the house 3 years ago, right as we were preparing it for some of the demo.

Here it is once we began the demo and updated all the wiring and added more outlets.

We had to patch all the cracks in the plaster walls we kept. We kept the majority (all but one and a half) of the original plaster walls in this room because they were in descent shape – even though it doesn’t look like it.

In this picture, Joey is carefully removing a portion of the plaster wall that was in horrible shape. He had to break it in a straight line down a stud so we could attach a piece of drywall to the stud.

See? The new drywall is in the far corner.

We also built a closet in this bedroom since it didn’t have one.

Then we got busy drywalling and mudding…

…primed and textured the walls…

…painted and cut and rehung some of the original trim from the house.

We recycled one of the original doors from the house and used it in the closet. It didn’t quite fit, so we had to add a jam extension. See the lighter piece of wood next to the dark stained original woodowrk? That’s the jam extension. It’s basically just a piece of wood the lumber yard cut to fit. Jam extension just sounds fancier.

Finally…the room is done, except we’re still waiting on our new windows and the hardwood floors won’t be refinished for about another month.

Here’s a recap…

Really Before:
That new closet sits in this corner. That doorway is no longer there. That door is now the new closet door.

Don’t mind that radiator sitting in the middle of the room. We had to remove it from the wall so we could drywall and paint behind it. Yes, this means that we haven’t had heat in this room (during winter) for the last 3 months. The plumber will be coming to hook it back up just in time for summer to begin.

Sadly, I’m still using that crappy, barely standing up plastic closet. Joey gets the new closet in this room until the master bedroom is finished. Believe it or not, the closet Joey is currently using is worse than my dinky plastic one.

It’s all starting to make sense…. this isn’t about the bathroom, that was just a smokescreen. This is all about closet space. I knew as soon as I saw the new closet that something was fishy here….. no way the self described “girlie-girl” is gonna be satisfied with that shoebox of a closet. The room does look great.

I just came across this the other day after starting a bathroom complete tear out/remodel.
I'd just like to say what a very well written, informative and humorous article this is.
Well done and I hope you are finished with your project.
