A Constructed Life

Cause in this house, diapers also make great hats

Addy is becoming increasingly independent. It’s something that breaks my heart as much as it fills it with pride and happiness. Every little milestone or insistence of  “Mommy, let me do it!” takes her further down the path of Big Girlhood, a place I strive to help her reach but simultaneously dread.

Lately, Adeline has started changing her own diaper. Keep in mind that she has a very special relationship with her Pull Ups, often sorting through the entire package and selecting her favorites (first, it was Dora dressed like a princess, now only Pull Ups with Mater, the tow truck from the movie Cars, are acceptable). She carries them around the house with her and lays them out on the floor to count. Adeline loves diapers, which is probably why she is not yet potty trained despite my best efforts.

So, when a few weeks ago, I went to change her out of her nighttime diaper into a Pull Up, I almost crapped my own pants when I realized she had beat me to it. I’ve caught her in the act a few times now, and the kid even gets out a wipe to clean herself up and puts everything in the garbage when she’s done. It’s all very impressive to me.

However. Not all self-diapering attempts have been successful.

But who says diapers shouldn’t be worn on the head? They’ll certainly keep her hair dry in a rain storm and even have built-in openings for pigtails. It’s really quite brilliant.
