A Constructed Life

Life’s Difficult Decisions

Two months ago, shortly before I became a mom, Joey and I welcomed a new arrival into our home and it’s made a dramatic difference to our quality of life. From its ability to broil, bake or boil, I am endlessly grateful for this contraption, this “oven,” and what it has done for the way eat.

Long before we began remodeling our kitchen, the oven that came with our house decided to retire. Knowing a new kitchen was in our future and that the broke-down oven only added to the kitchen’s horrific ambiance…

…we opted not to fix it. That was two days before Christmas of 2008. And, day after day, as I struggled with the inability to bake anything, the lack of an oven became a huge pain in the ass, primarily because it made our booties grow and stretch since we were forced to eat out more.

So, when our new oven arrived, we felt such joy and anticipation over the mouthwatering creations that would soon emerge from its door.

We opened and closed it over and over, pushed all its buttons and turned all its dials. And then became totally overwhelmed by the thousands of things we could bake in it – brownies, quiche, casseroles, a roast, homemade bread and even Shrinky Dinks! Add in the fact that my job literally puts thousands of recipes at my fingertips and that Joey and I can be quite indecisive, and you’ve got two New Oven Virgins who could not rise to the occasion. Now that we could finally bake, we had no idea what to make.

After much debating, Joey and I hopped into the car, drove to the grocery store and returned with one item to christen the new oven.

A frozen pizza. After all, we’d been eating microwaved pizza rolls for far too long and wanted a taste of the real thing. At first, we felt embarrassed by our choice, but reasoned we were welcoming the oven to our home with a classic “you need an oven to make this” dish, one that is made in millions of ovens across the world on a daily basis. We were celebrating our new oven with an “everyman” kind of meal and we were proud of it!

I am pleased to say that since its arrival, our oven has been used almost daily. And that’s because our grill is now broken.

Don't you love those stainless steel beauties?

I so get your dilemma. Our oven is still virginal. The cooktop has been used … once. But when you're in the throes of remodeling, who has time to cook?!
