A Constructed Life

What are those large square boxes on the wall?

It’s been three years since a cabinet last graced my kitchen walls. And when they were there, they lived clustered together in the pantry, like this:

I loved our pantry with its original cabinets and farmhouse sink – it was a large part of what drew me to our house in the first place. But, after a year and a half of living in our very original home, I realized that although the pantry was incredibly charming, it was also incredibly inconvenient because the cabinets and sink were located about 30 feet from the prep area of the kitchen.

So, we eventually opted to reconfigure the kitchen’s floor plan, along with the floor plan of our entire house, which meant ripping down the cabinets (don’t worry – we saved all the hardware and the shelves now hang in our basement) so we could tear open the wall they hung on.

Long story short, this is what we’ve been using as “cabinets” for the past several years:

Needless to say, we’re getting very anxious to have real cabinets. So, after returning from a “one last fling before a baby turns our world upside down” trip to Door County, Wisconsin, Joey and I spent a few hours hanging some of our Ikea cabinets. It went relatively smoothly, thanks to the handy poster-sized instructions that came with the cabinets.

Happily, we had some wires poking out of our wall that made the perfect hook for the poster.

Although I saw the cabinets go up one by one, their full impact didn’t hit until after we were finished for the night and I came around the corner to this glorious site…

Those are cabinets – real, honest-to-goodness cabinets that can store kitchen-type products in an organized way! I can put things in there and then easily find them! And when I’m not using the aforementioned kitchen-type products, they will be neatly tucked away behind a lovely cabinet door that opens and closes without me needing to grunt and cuss.

It’s going to take some time to adjust to these conveniences, just like I’m still adjusting to our new-fangled “light switches” because I occasionally forget we have electricity. As odd as it may sound, these are luxuries I am not accustomed to.

I’m proud to say we’re one more step closer to finishing the kitchen. Now here’s the big question: What will happen first – A) We’ll prepare our first meal in the new kitchen of B) I’ll hatch a baby?
